Why Do These Actors Hate Their Own Movies?

If you are the star of a movie, it usually means that you love the plot and everything about it. In the first place, you wouldn’t have accepted the contract and have your lawyers review the terms. For various reasons, though, several actors and actresses have come to hate their very own films and even TV series. One example of this is Angus T. Jones of Two and a Half Men. Now that he has more spiritual conviction, he detests the premise of the sitcom and even campaigns against watching it. Who else among our favorite celebrities have the same sentiments and why?

George Clooney

While it may seem like a good money management strategy, accepting a role just for money’s sake does not seem to be a good idea. At least, that is what George Clooney realized. He admitted that he had made a lot of subpar movies, but nothing was as bad as his performance in Return of the Killer Tomatoes. He revealed in interviews that he was just in it for the money.

David Cross

Normally, when you have a new movie coming out, you’d want to say good things about it so that backend royalties would be coming in fast. The same cannot be said with David Cross. He hated the film Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked so much he advertised against watching it. Cross claimed that it was merely a big commercial for the Carnival Cruise Lines.

Gary Oldman

We know that actors are very flexible and can make the needed investments when in a particular role. For Gary Oldman, however, it was way too much. He starred alongside Matthew McConaughey in the movie Tiptoes, where he was cast as the vertically challenged brother. Oldman basically had to be on his knees to achieve the height disparity, which did not really sit well with the actor.

Halle Berry

When you are already associated with a famous superhero, perhaps it is best not to take on the role of another. That was the lesson Halle Berry learned the hard way when she starred as the titular character in 2004’s Catwoman. Her career took a dip that time, and she even received a Razzie Award for Worst Actress. Like the good sport that she is, though, she proudly accepted the award and even gave an “appreciation” speech. Of course, she had many people to thank for, including her lawyers, business managers, and most especially, Warner Brothers. Thankfully, Berry is such a good actress, and her career bounced back without a hitch.

Alec Guinness

Who would have believed that the role of a Jedi master in Star Wars: A New Hope would be hated so much? Alec Guinness, who received a great degree of fame for the role, shared that he never liked portraying Obi-Wan Kenobi because he felt out of touch with the young. He also did not like that the lines were frequently changed. At least he still earned a fortune in the end, though.

Charlize Theron

Most movies where Charlize Theron is a cast have been box office hits—take the example of Bombshell and Aeon Flux. There is one movie, however, that she never liked, and apparently so did the viewers. Reindeer Games was not received well by the audience despite being star-studded, with Ben Affleck and Gary Sinise in the mix. Theron herself declared the movie as not a good one.

Gwyneth Paltrow

As an actress, Gwyneth Paltrow has made quite a few wrong decisions when it comes to accepting roles. We know the degree of care she exhibits before taking on a part. With that in mind, it came as a surprise when she later admitted that she made the mistake of becoming a part of View from the Top, a “terrible” film even by her standards.

Sylvester Stallone

There were moments in his career that Sylvester Stallone was not so proud of, and one of these was when he starred in the movie Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot alongside Estelle Getty. Perhaps the violence or the dialogue turned him off, but he described it as one of the worst movies he has ever done.

Christopher Plummer

No, we don’t call Christopher Plummer for plumbing services. Despite the way his surname sounds, he is an actor. It is surprising, though, that he actually hates one of the most-loved movies of all time, The Sound of Music. However, his hatred was more due to personal preferences than anything related to the movie itself. In short, he said that the film was just not his cup of tea.
